The Three Types of Vehicle Electrification

The first is MHEV, or Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The second is PHEV, or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The third is BEV, or Battery Electric Vehicle, commonly referred to as a fully electric vehicle.

The key difference between these technologies comes down to how much the vehicle relies on electricity compared with a traditional internal combustion engine.

What Is a Mild Hybrid (MHEV)?

Let's start with the most familiar option: the Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV).

Using the Mazda CX-70 as an example, an MHEV is primarily powered by a petrol engine, supported by a small electric motor and battery system.

In everyday driving, the electric system assists the engine during certain driving conditions, helping improve fuel efficiency and overall performance.

What's It Like to Drive a Mild Hybrid?

From behind the wheel, the driving experience feels very familiar. The petrol engine continues to do most of the work, while the electric system provides support in the background.

Do You Need to Charge a Mild Hybrid?

One of the key benefits of an MHEV is convenience. Unlike a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle, a mild hybrid does not need to be plugged in to charge. The battery is automatically recharged while driving.

For many drivers, a mild hybrid can provide some of the benefits of electrification without requiring any changes to their daily routine.

When choosing between an MHEV, PHEV or BEV, there is no single solution that suits everyone. The right choice depends on your driving habits, lifestyle and vehicle requirements.
